State that continued to practice slavery following the Civil WarToday is January 1: The Emancipation ProclamationOn this day in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order to the Executive Branches of the U.S. government, including the Army and the Navy, as a war measure affecting the 10 States that were still in rebellion in the American Civil War. The Order proclaimed the freedom of 3.1 million slaves among the 4 millions in the United States at the time.

Today is January 3: On this day in 1959, Alaska became the 49th State. In 1867, Secretary of State William Seward purchased Alaska from the financially-strapped czar of Russia.
