State that continued to practice slavery following the Civil WarToday is January 1: The Emancipation Proclamation - On this day in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order to the Executive Branches of the U.S. government, including the Army and the Navy, as a war measure affecting the 10 States that were still in rebellion in the American Civil War. The Order proclaimed the freedom of 3.1 million slaves among the 4 millions in the United States at the time.

Today is January 3: On this day in 1959, Alaska became the 49th State. In 1867, Secretary of State William Seward purchased Alaska from the financially-strapped czar of Russia. At the time, Alaska was called "Seward's icebox." It turned out that for decades, Alaska produced much of the nation's oil and has had more mountain wildlife areas than all other states combined.
